Starting Up Your Device
Welcome to Trézor.io/Start®
Congratulations on your new Trézor hardware wallet. This official setup portal will guide you step by step to safely initialize your device, secure your cryptographic keys, and begin using your wallet with confidence.
It’s essential to follow every step carefully — your security depends on it.
Trézor.io/Start® is the only verified entry point for initializing your wallet. By using this portal, you ensure that all software components, firmware updates, and instructions are from trusted sources.
What You’ll Need
- Your Trézor device (Model One, Model T, or other supported model)
- The original USB cable (with data capability, not just charging)
- A desktop or laptop computer (Windows / macOS / Linux) with internet access
- A pen (or pencil) and paper — to write your recovery seed
- Approximately 10–15 minutes of uninterrupted time
- A quiet, private space — no one looking over your shoulder
Important: Do not use your smartphone or mobile browser (unless explicitly supported). Never capture your recovery seed digitally (no photos, no screenshots, no cloud storage).
Step‑by‑Step Setup Instructions
Step 1:
Visit the Official Start Page
Open your browser and go directly to
https://trezor.io/start. Confirm you see a secure lock icon and the correct domain name. Do **not** click links from emails or ads claiming to help with setup.
Step 2:
Select Your Device Model
Choose the model you purchased (e.g. Model One or Model T). This ensures you see instructions tailored to your hardware.
Step 3:
Download Trézor Suite
Click the link appropriate for your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux). Optionally, use the Web version if supported, but for initial setup, the desktop version is recommended.
Step 4:
Install and Launch Trézor Suite
Run the downloaded installer and follow the prompts. Grant necessary permissions (e.g., USB access). After installation, open the app.
Step 5:
Connect Your Trézor Device
Plug your Trézor into a USB port using the supplied cable. The Suite app should detect it. If prompted, allow it to communicate with the device.
Step 6:
Install or Update Firmware
If a firmware update is required, follow on‑screen instructions. Confirm the firmware fingerprint on the device itself before proceeding—never skip this step.
Step 7:
Create a New Wallet
Choose “Create new wallet” option. The device will then generate a recovery seed (12, 18, or 24 words) and display each word one by one on the screen.
Step 8:
Write Down Your Recovery Seed
On the blank card provided (or your own paper), write each word exactly in order. **Never** photograph, screenshot, or type the seed. After writing all words, confirm them on the device when prompted.
Step 9:
Set a PIN Code
Choose a PIN to protect your device. Every time you unlock the device, you will enter this PIN. Don’t write it down digitally—if you forget it, you may need your seed to restore access.
Step 10:
Explore Your Wallet
Once setup is complete, you may:
- Add cryptocurrency accounts (Bitcoin, Ethereum, and others)
- Receive funds — verify the address on the physical device screen before sharing
- Send transactions — always confirm amounts & addresses on your device
- Enable optional advanced features like passphrase protection or hidden wallets
Step 11:
Keep Your System Updated
Regularly update Trézor Suite and firmware when prompted. Stay vigilant about phishing sites and always verify domain names before entering sensitive information.
Security Best Practices
Your setup process is the most critical time to protect your keys. Here are some essential practices:
- Never share your recovery seed. No support, no website, no one should ever ask for it.
- Verify all addresses on your device screen. Malware or clipboard hijacks can alter displayed addresses.
- Use strong, non‑sequential PINs. Avoid common patterns (e.g. 1234, 0000).
- Consider enabling a passphrase. This acts as an extra “word 25” — but if lost, funds are unrecoverable.
- Store backups in multiple safe places. Use offline, fireproof, waterproof media if possible.
- Bookmark official pages. Always manually type “trezor.io/start” rather than click unknown links.
- Beware of phishing. Fake sites mimic design but will try to steal your seed or install malicious software.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues during setup, here are common solutions:
- Device not recognized: Try a different USB cable, another USB port, reboot or reinstall the app.
- Firmware installation fails: Ensure no power interruption and only one instance of Suite running.
- Forgot PIN: The device will wipe itself after several failed attempts. Recover using your seed.
- Lost or damaged device: Get a new device and restore using your recovery seed.
- Address mismatch: Cancel the transaction. Recheck Suite and firmware. Only proceed when address matches device screen.
- Phishing or suspicious site: Close browser, clear cache, and always re-visit trezor.io/start.
